Surrounded by her family, Mary Louise “Betty” Martinez passed away May 6 in her home in Leadville.

She was born in Monte Vista, Colo., on Nov. 13, 1947. Her parents are Gregorita Aragon Quintana and the late Victor Quintana, Sr.

When Betty was 2, she and her family moved to Leadville where she remained the rest of her life. She went to school in Leadville, graduating from Lake County High School and furthering her education at Colorado Mountain College.

Betty was the medical director at St. Vincent General Hospital for many years. During her career she also worked for Colorado Mountain Medical in Vail.

Betty was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church and belonged to the Catholic Daughters. Betty also taught Catholicism classes.

Those who knew Betty enjoyed her beautiful big eyes, friendly smile, and heart full of love and laughter. Betty’s most special times were spent with her family and friends.

She always put other’s needs before her own and was always ready to listen and lend a helping hand. Betty left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Betty enjoyed walks along the lake during the summer and snowshoeing along the Leadville trail in the winter. She especially liked the fall colors of the aspen leaves ” she found beauty in every season.

Betty took pleasure in cooking for her family and guests; Denver shopping trips with her friends; exchanging the latest book readings with her sister; soaking at the hot springs; and listening and dancing to music.

She is survived by her sons, Orlando (Karen) Martinez, of Edwards, and Julian Martinez, of San Francisco; her mother, Gregorita Quintana, of Leadville; brother Victor Quintana Jr.; sisters Emma Pacheco, of Leadville, and MaryAnn Martinez, of Denver; grandchildren Renee (Scot) Hinkel and O.J. Martinez, both of Edwards; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Victor Quintana Sr.; and sisters Esther Quintana and Esther Madril.

The Rosary was recited on May 9 and Mass of Christian Burial was May 10, both at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. The Reverend Gus Stewart officiated and Betty’s dear friend, Sister Mary Claritam, sang, accompanied by Neil V. Reynolds.

Betty was laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom and David Pacheco; Marcelo Arguello; Jason Medina; Steve McLinden; and Rudy Sandoval. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Pacheco and Larry Lovato. Following the service, the family received friends at the Leadville Eagle’s Lodge.

Betty’s family would like to thank the community, family, and friends for their outpouring of love and support. Their mother will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
