Hazel Gay Vollmert
November 29, 1926 - November 22, 2016
Gay was a person who rarely
revealed her inner thoughts.
Yes, she lived her life by
maxims she freely expressed,
like "Where there’s a will,
there’s a way... you just have
to find it!" but often nothing
deeper. After Alzheimer’s
began to shadow her life, it
seemed to release some
inhibitions and she shared a
few of her more personal
takes on life. Two of these are
shared to reflect how
determined she was to lead a
narrowly defined life of high
standards, as well as a more
poetic side to her thoughts.
When asked how she had
come to live such a long life,
she replied, "You think I
have? Well, I do everything
I’m supposed to do. I try to do
everything to the best of my
ability. But you know, it’s a lot like rolling a ball (she
pantomimes)...it goes one way and you have to do everything
you can to steer it this way (indicating a different path for the
ball to take.)"
Her husband, Warren Vollmert, was "tall, dark and handsome"
and a wonderful dancer, which went very well with Gay’s "five
feet two and eyes of blue!" and her love of dancing. So after
more than 60 years of marriage, it was heartbreaking as well as
heartwarming when she made this reply to, "Did you ever
marry?" "No, I never got to marry Warren...but I’d sure like to!
Warren is a beautiful man. He’s about 22 years old and a
wonderful friend. He’s not my husband, but I’d love for him to
be. He’s dependable. He always has something spicy to talk
about. You don’t have to dig under an orchard tree to find
something to talk about!"
Please come join Gay’s family in a celebration of her life at
10:30 in the Delta City cemetery on Wednesday, May 17. Her
children, Lisa Vigil, Barry (JoAnn) Vollmert, Mark (Mary)
Vollmert, and Larraine Pallas would love to hear your stories
and memories.
