EAGLE COUNTY – Donald Ray Mathews, 66, of Eckert died Thursday.
Don was born July 6, 1943, in Stillwell, Okla, to Roy and Geraldine Mathews.
A longtime resident of the Eagle Valley, he graduated from Battle Mountain High School in 1963. Don, who was known to friends as “Donnie” or “Moose,” was an Air Force veteran and a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation.
Don was full of life and was loved by everyone. He never met a stranger.
He worked as a truck driver for most of his life. He had a great love of the outdoors – he loved fishing and hunting.
He idolized and adored his wife, Gilberta. He loved his family unconditionally and was always ready with a helping hand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Geraldine, and brothers, Carol Whitmire and Bill Mathews.
He is survived by his wife, Gilberta; sons Jeffery, Michael and Colin; and grandchildren, Natasha, Kristy, Grace, Grey, Chance, Hunter and McKinze.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Gypsum.
Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
