Maurice Wendell Woodcock,
93, died peacefully in his
home in Grand Junction on
Friday, June 23, 2017, after a
short illness with cancer.
He was born June 2, 1924,
the son of Ray and Rita
(Hitchens) Woodcock. He
grew up on the family ranch
with his brother in Steamboat Springs. As a result of his brother
Roy’s poor health, his parents sold the ranch and moved to a
farm in Fruita at the age of 13. A year later a baby sister joined
the family.
Maurice graduated from Fruita Union High School in 1943. In
November of 1944, he joined the US Maritime Commission
serving his country until December 1946. Maurice returned to
Grand Junction area working different jobs.
On December 24, 1947, he married his wife, Ruby Johnson. In
November of 1952, he was hired at the Redlands Power Plant
where he worked for 56 years as a maintenance operator.
Maurice and Ruby bought property near the plant where they
made their home. He was a very diverse artist, and built
beautiful rock walls around his property and turned it into a park
like setting. He was also a very talented gunsmith, who made
exquisite black powder rifles and other guns as a hobby. After
retirement he continued working on his property, enjoying
gunsmithing, and grew the best “Super Fantastic” tomatoes
which he shared with many people. Maurice loved the Lord and
was active in the Fruita Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Grand Junction; sister,
Cheryl (Don) Jones of Grand Junction; brother-in-law, Clarence
Johnson of Idaho; son, Dale of Texas; daughter, Diane (Rob)
Irvine of Nevada; several nieces and nephews and great nieces
and nephews.
Maurice will be missed by all who came into contact with him,
and especially his coworkers who he considered part of his
family. His sweet spirit and kindness will be missed by all, but
he is rejoicing in Heaven now. His legacy was truly a “Life Well
Lived”.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017, at
10:30 a.m., in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Nightingales Care Givers for their
dedication and compassion for Maurice and Ruby. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Nightingale’s Care Giver’s
2352 N. 7th Street, Grand Junction, CO, 81501.
