BENARDA TAGUE MEEHAN

When Benarda Tague Meehan passed away in Denver, Oct. 29, there passed from this county the mark of another family, who meant much in development of the Red Cliff-Eagle communities. Benarda Teague was born In Red Cliff, February 24, 1891, to Patrick and Lydia Teague. Her father was one of the early day county judges of Eagle county, and upon his death his wife was appointed to the office—the county’s first lady judge. Benarda was educated in the Red Cliff schools and in Greeley, where she studied to become a iteacher, teaching in the Eagle Public School. It was in Eagle where she and her mother joined the Eastern Star in 1915, and for years was one of the lodge’s most active members, until she became ill. Later she joined the Catholic Church. It was in Red Cliff she met William (Billy) J. Meehan, young attorney who moved from Aspen to Red Cliff to open law offices. In June 1915, 'Miss Tague accompanied Billy to Buena Vista, as far as their friends knew, to attend a baseball game. When they returned to Red Cliff, they announced they had been married in Buena Vista. They made their home in Red Cliff, until the early 1920’s when they moved to Eagle to make their home and Billy opened his law office here, later becoming district attorney, a position he held at the time of his death a few years ago. Three daughters were bom to the Meehans in Red Cliff; Josephine, Patricia, and Benny. When Mrs Meehan was still a young woman, she became ill, and tne last several years of her life" saw her “confined to her home hospitals, and nursing homes. Funeral services were held at the Lakewood Catholic Church, and burial in Denver. Other than the daughters, all of Denver, Mrs Meehan is survived (by two brothers, James Tague of Long Beach, Calif., Harold of Denver; two sisters, Josephine Hurlbut, Menlo Park, Calif., and Ruth Darrow of Olathe.
