CHARLEY MERRILL

Charles S. Merrill, former Eagle man. died Mar. 31, 1957 at the home of his son.. Charles Jr. in Erie, Pa. One of eleven children, Mr. Merrill moved to steamboat Springs in 1902, before the Moffat railroad was built in that section of Colorado. The elder Mr. Merrill founded the First National Bank at Steamboat, and the bank at Craig. In 1904 his son,Charley took over mani agement of the Craig bank. He married Nora Green, who preceded him in death several years ago. Mr Merrill, for a time was with the U. S. Land Office in Glenwood Springs, and owned a | store in Wolcott. Following his j wife’s death. Mr Merrill moved to Eagle, where he served as District Clerk in Eagle County, | then worked for the First NatI ional Bank of Eagle County, in j their facilities at Camp Hade.

In 1946 he went to Brighton, ;where he joined his brother, Walter In Merrill Realty Co. When his sister, Grace, with whom he made his home In Brighton, died last fall, Mr. Merrill went east to be with his sons. Robert Is employed by the U. S. Rubber Company at Detroit and Charles. Jr. is with General Electric Co. at Erie, Pa. Survivors Include his two sons, three living brothers and five sisters. Two sisters preceded him In death. One sister, Mrs. A. R. Glassburn lives In Craig, and a brother, Walter lives In Brighton. The others live In California. Seven grandsons also survive. Interment was In Craig last Thursday. Mr. Merrill’s two sons Robert and Charles, Jr. and the latter’s two sons came for the funeral, joining their uncle and aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Merrill at Brighton for the trip to Craig.

CHARLEY MERRILL BURIED IN CRAIG TODAY

The Tom Lewis family of Eagle learned Monday of the death of Charley Merrill, former Wolcott merchant, and Clerk of the District Court. Mr. Merrill made his home in Eagle after he retired from the merchandising business, and became clerk of the District Court in Eagle County, holding the position until the late 1940’s, when he moved to Brighton to Join his brother. Walter in operation of Merrill Realty Co. Funeral services will be in Craig today, and burial will be there by the side of his wife.
