Loretta G. Weir, 99, passed
away at home on May 14,
2017, following a lengthy
illness.
She was born to Arthur and
Sadie Milner on September
22, 1917, in Brooklyn, NY..
Following the death of her
mother, she was raised by
Electra and Meddie St.
Germain in Brooklyn. After
leaving school at age 16, she was trained to care for babies,
chronically ill, abused and neglected children.
On May 11, 1940, Loretta married Allan Weir. They lived in
Rockaway Beach, NY until Allan retired from the U.S. Coast
Guard in 1955. It was there that their daughter, Aggie, was born.
With Allan’s retirement and subsequent employment with the
FAA came the move to Grand Junction, CO. A homemaker
throughout her marriage, it was in Grand Junction that Loretta
learned to drive, play bridge, bowl and play golf. A cheerful,
outgoing person, she also became a very active volunteer being
the first person to deliver for Meals on Wheels in Grand
Junction. She received the Service to Mankind Award from the
Sertoma Club of Grand Junction in 1969 and the Grand Junction
Area Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award in
1975 for her volunteer work with the State Home (now known
as the Regional Center), St. Mary’s and VA Hospitals, and St.
Joseph’s and Immaculate Heart of Mary Schools.
Diagnosed with Macular Degeneration in about 1980, she was
forced to give up her volunteer duties and became an avid
listener of talking books.
She was preceded in death by both sets of parents; her
husband, Allan Weir; two brothers and one sister. Loretta is
survived by her daughter, Aggie Weir, of Grand Junction; her
sister, Bernadetta Blaney, of St. Petersburg, FL and several
