Eagle Valley Enterprise - October 1974

James Edward Luark, a pioneer of Eagle and Routt Counties, died on Thursday morning October 3 in Valley View Hospital at Glenwood Springs. Ed was born in Shelton, NE on June 3, 1899 to William S. and Rose Luark. His early boyhood was spent in the Boulder area. As a young man he moved to Oregon where he worked as an engineer on a dredge in the Willamette River. In 1923, he, his brothers, and mother took up homesteads on Sunnyside Divide near Toponas and Yampa, Colorado. In 1940, he married Hazel Frichtel of Hayden, Colorado and they extended their ranching operations to Burns, Colorado. They had one son, Ted. Hazel died in 1953. In 1956 he married Peg Cord. Ed retired from ranching in 1969 and he and his wife built their home on Yucca Mesa, overlooking the Colorado River southwest of McCoy. Until his illness in 1972, he was an active participant in school and community affairs. He is survived by his wife, Peg, his son Ted and family Fawn, Grant, and Billie Leann, his mother Rose and two brothers, Wilbur and Victor and their families. A Sunset service, conducted by Rev. J. Frank Knowles on October 5, preceded interment in the McCoy Pioneer Cemetery.
