Twenty-four-year Eagle Valley resident Nicholas Luchycky died Saturday, essentially of heart failure. He was 86.

Nick was born in Western Ukraine March 3, 1923. As a teenager, World War II separated him from his family, which he had not seen since, except for his nephew, Nikolay, who came to Colorado in 1992.

While still in Europe, Nick was able associate himself with the U.S. Army as an interpreter, which facilitated his immigration sponsorship by some relatives already living in the U.S. He became a naturalized citizen in the late 1940s and made Patterson, N.J. his home, where he worked as a pattern maker and designer. He had learned tailoring in Europe previously.

Nick meet his wife, Frederica, in the winter of 1964-65 at the MacGregor Sportswear Factory in Dover N.J. They were married on Feb. 13, 1965. They trotted all over the eastern United States in the late 1960s and 1970s, living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Hampshire and Vermont. Eventually they moved west to Santa Fe and finally to Eagle in 1985.

Nick retired from tailoring in the early 1990s in Gypsum. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, boxing and wrestling, being around animals and especially his family.

Nick is survived by his wife, Frederica; daughter Michele; sons Patrick, Matthew (and his wife Sandi), Frederick and Nicholas; and nephews Nikolay and Bodan, who are his sister’s sons. Nick will be missed and always loved. God bless him.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Gypsum. A potluck dinner will follow the service.
