Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 3D Obituary - July 23, 2017

Wes was born in Phippsburg,
CO, to James Whaley and
Jessie Knaus. He was a hardworking
man, who lost his
mother when he was six. He
worked with his siblings,
Merle, Newell, Vivian,
Blaine, James, and Myrtle,
and Dad as family cook,
cleaning, making angel food
cakes with his brother,
helping run a saw mill, and hauling logs. He later worked on the
railroad and as a ranch foreman on a large spread while owning
his own small ranch in Phippsburg.
Wes played clarinet, banjo, guitar, and piano, and entertained
at dances all over Routt County. He moved to Clifton in 1958,
and began work as a building contractor, starting his own
company, Wes Whaley Construction. He built countless homes
in the area and made many life-long friends. He trained
nephews and his son in the building trade, and worked well into
his eighties doing small jobs for those he knew, and enlisting his
son, Morgan, when a job was more than he could handle.
He served in the Army during WWII, and was stationed in
Hawaii until his release in 1946. He was very proud of his early
days of training and his time serving in Hawaii.
He married Norma "Jackie" Roberts on April 12, 1947, in
Steamboat Springs, CO, and they celebrated 70 years of
marriage before his passing.
Jackie survives, as well as their children, Morgan (GJ) and his
sons, Tyler and Tanner, andVickie Holsan (Kent) of Clifton and
their daughters, Cassie and Libby.
Wes was a great story teller, and we only hope to hold onto
those tales of old.
No services are planned. A gathering of family and friends to
be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to HopeWest Hospice,
3090B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
