Lola Mae
Myers Bangert
December 6, 1920 - September 1, 2017
Lola was born on the Eastern
Slope in Hughes, Colorado.
She remembered the family
caravanning over the
mountains to Delta, in a
covered wagon, when she was
just four years old. Delta
would be home for a lifetime.
She was the seventh of
twelve children born to Francis Irvin and Dolly Mae O’neal
Myers. She graduated from the eighth grade in 1934 and began
working.
While in the employ of Mr. and Mrs. Norva McClurg, Lola fell
in love with their hired hand, Dave Bangert. She married Dave
June 2nd, 1937, in Delta, and they honeymooned on Kebler Pass
in a Model T.
While Dave farmed and worked at the Holly Sugar Factory,
Lola took care of their growing family. They built their own
home in North Delta in 1952. They had six children, Cecil
Douglas, Peggy Mae, Karen Elizabeth, Larry David, Buckley
Jay and Debra Lee. Lola always claimed Dave’s son from a
previous marriage, Lawrence. They were married 42 years.
Dave passed away in 1979. Lola remained on the family farm
for 17 years by herself. She was a genius at making life
wonderful on a shoe string. She gave away quilts, stuffed toys,
crocheted pot holders, fresh garden vegetables, world class
kosher dill pickles, bouquets of flowers, and love abundantly.
She helped care for elderly family members and neighbors.
Lola was glad to welcome Karen and Cecil back to the farm
late in their lives. She enjoyed their company and appreciated
their help. She was the quiet, unassuming strength of the family
and leaves a seamless legacy of gentle dignity and faith.
Lola is survived by two sons, Cecil Douglas, of Delta,
Colorado, and Buckley of Cortez, Colorado: two daughters,
Peggy (Morris) McCool of Kent, Washington; Debra (Henry)
Bonzek of Palisade, Colorado; Sylvia Bangert, wife of step-son,
Lawrence, lives in Reno, Nevada; two of Lola’s siblings
survive, her youngest brother, Donald Myers and her sister, Iona
Kearns, both live in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
She was predeceased by brothers, Jess, Cecil, and Harold
Myers; sisters, Hazel Myers, Opal Weams, Gladys Wright, and
Thelma Couture; two brothers, George and Lawrence died in
childhood.
Lola is also survived by grandchildren, Audrey Bangert (Zac
Beavers) of Delta; Jim McCool of Tucson, Arizona; Andy
McCool (Ann) and Jon McCool (Jeanne) both of Seattle,
Washington; Monica McCool (Alan’s wife) of Denver and Ben
Roberts and Elizabeth Roberts (Aaron Muscle) both of Raleigh,
North Carolina; David Bangert (Tina) of Reno, Nevada; Robert
Bangert of Salida, Colorado; Richard Bangert (Christine),
Brenda Cortez (George) of Reno, and Joan Terry (Steve) of
Elko, Nevada. Lola’s great-grandchildren are Andrea, Elizabeth,
Mary and Conner McCool (Andy’s children); Oona McCool
(Alan’s daughter), and Elizabeth’s children, Libby and Wesley
Muscle. From the five children of Lawrence and Sylvia,
Veronica Bangert, Vanessa (Johnny) Alvarado, Vincent (Elise)
Bangert, Jordan (Chad) White, Kenyon Terry, James Terry,
Staci Bangert and Kelly Bangert, and her great-greatgrandchildren,
Delilah Bangert, Rylan Cortez, Sofia Bangert,
Landon Cortes and Autumn White.
Son, Larry David, died in 1957, and her daughter, Karen
Roberts in 2012. Grandson, Alex Bangert, 2015. Buckly’s wife,
Molly Bangert, in 2016. Lawrence Bangert, in 2017. Grandson,
Alan McCool, in 2017.
After Karen’s death in 2012, Lola came to live with Debra in
Palisade until she fell and broke her hip in April of 2014. She
was then cared for at Larchwood Inns in Grand Junction. Thank
you to every staff member, the wonderful fellow residents, as
well as the dear families of residents. HopeWest of Grand
Junction also rendered wonderful help during Lola’s last few
months.
Services will be in Delta at Taylor Funeral Home on Friday,
September 8, at 2:00 p.m.
