Jack Phillips passed away peacefully Sunday after losing his battle with cancer. He was born Jack Marvin Phillips on July 23, 1932, in Glenwood Springs to James and Myrtle Phillips.Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, but above all Jack was a loving and caring dad. Jack spent many hours with his family in the outdoors enjoying picnics, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.Jack served his community for years as treasurer of the First Methodist Church, Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce and the town of Eagle. He also served on the Eagle County School Board. He was a member of the American Legion for 55 years. After graduation from Eagle County High School in Gypsum in 1949, Jack joined the U.S. Air Force, and while stationed in Shreveport, La., he met his wife of 54 years, Johnnette Anderson. Jack’s grandfather moved from southern Kansas and homesteaded in Yampa Valley, where Jack’s father, James Phillips was born. Jack’s family was in the sawmill business for many years on the Western Slope, where he spent much of his youth working. He learned to drive a truck at age 12. In addition to working at the sawmill, Jack worked at First National Bank in Eagle for 10 years, and bought his own truck and went on the road for a year. He drove a log truck for Kaibab Industries and drove a asphalt truck for B & B Excavating until he retired.He was a supportive and helpful husband to Johnnette’s many community endeavors. Johnnette served Eagle County as Eagle County clerk and recorder for 14 years and as Eagle County commissioner for eight years.Jack is survived by his wife, Johnnette Phillips, of Eagle; and their children and their spouses, Jill King and husband Mike, of Berthod, Colo., Jan Bado and husband Daryl, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jackie Schlegel and husband Rod of Burns, Colo., and Jeff Phillips and wife Kerry of Fruita, Colo. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Todd, Brittany and Traci Schlegel, Dalton and Marshall King, and Taylor Phillips. Jack is also survived by brothers James M Phillips, John M. Phillips; sister JoAnn Clark,; and well as many nieces and nephews .and cousins.A kind and gentle man, Jack will be deeply missed by the many friends and loved ones who where privileged to have known and respected him.A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday at the United Methodist Church in Eagle to celebrate the life of Jack Phillips.
