Gerald Douglas "Jerry" Dyer
passed away suddenly on
Saturday morning, July 22nd.
He was 86.
Jerry was a Colorado native,
born November 6th, 1930, in
Englewood, and spent most of
the last 30 years of his life in
the Grand Junction area. His
love for his native state was
equalled only by his love for
his family and his country. Jerry loved his country enough to
devote almost 22 years in the United States Army as an
officer/aviator. He served two full tours in Vietnam in 1962-
1963 and 1967-1968. Jerry flew both fixed wing aircraft and
helicopters. He always loved to fly.
Jerry grew up in Lakewood, graduating Lakewood High in
1949. He attended the University of Colorado on a football
scholarship (he had been a dynamite high school athlete,
lettering in football, basketball and track), but switched due to a
knee injury to the ROTC program. He graduated in 1953, and
entered the Army that year as a second lieutenant.
Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Gailya "Gay"
Sampson on July 28, 1950. They lived a loving and devoted life
together, missing their 67th anniversary by less than a week.
He leaves behind his beautiful wife and three loving sons,
Mark, Jerry, and Tom, and their respective mates Debbie,
Elaine, and Janis. Also missing him are his seven grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren. He was a role model and hero to us
all.
