Leland Earl Cofer

Leland Cofer, a longtime resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, died at his home on August 21, 2017. He was 96 years old.
Born in Stanberry, Missouri, to Clyde and Alda Cofer, the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1923, and owned a farm on Orchard Mesa. Leland attended Lincoln Elementary and Grand Junction High School. Leland enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940. He became a Captain and company commander in a Combat Engineer Battalion during the war in Europe and was awarded a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and five Battle Stars. He graduated from an engineering college in Kansas City, Missouri, with a degree in Civil Engineering. Leland married Bonnie Wolfe in 1947, and traveled extensively within the United States, pursuing his career. She preceded him in death in 2005. He returned to Grand Junction in 1954 and joined Corn Construction Company as an engineer and estimator. In 1957, he became associated with Davis Construction Company of Provo, Utah, and opened a branch office in Grand Junction. This company specialized in building water and sewage treatment plants and pumping plants for municipalities in several Western states. During this period, he secured his private pilot’s license and his first airplane. In 1961, he started his own business, Varulco Constructors; for 28 years he constructed water, sewage treatment plants, and pumping plants for municipalities and private developers in Colorado and New Mexico. He closed his business and retired in 1989. Leland was an avid reader of history, politics, and economics; he enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, golfing, nature, traveling, flying, and the study of philosophy. He is an over 50 member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 184, Morley, Missouri. He is survived by two brothers, Floyd Cofer of Leeton, Missouri, and Glenn Cofer of North Platte, Nebraska; as well as nieces and nephews. Leland requested that his ashes be scattered in the Colorado River. There will be no funeral or memorial service.
