Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 8A Obituary - October 11, 2017

Charlotte Ann Keough
Wilson passed away on
October 5, 2017, just hours
shy of her 89th birthday, at
Heidi’s Chateau Assisted
Living in Montrose. She lived
all her life in the Hotchkiss
area and is lovingly
remembered by friends,
family and community as a woman who worked hard, gave of
herself to her community and family, and supported those she
loved with quiet, unwavering loyalty.
As an only child, Charlotte was raised mostly by grandparents,
Ida and Miles Keough and Harry and Pauline Fetz. Her best
early memories were of summers spent up Leroux Creek on
Grand Mesa with the Keoughs building reservoirs with horse
teams - reservoirs that would provide precious water for
agriculture needs on Rogers Mesa and the Hotchkiss area. She
remembered fishing with her mom, sleeping in a hammock
above the adults in a tiny cabin, burning dry grass to keep
mosquitos away, and many other adventures. Summers were
filled with hours of play and work on horseback. Charlotte’s
favorite horse was her paint horse named Pat. It was in the
magic of the Leroux Creek summers that she met Ruth Hill
Cheskaty who became her lifelong friend.
Charlotte graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1946 and
attended college at Western State in Gunnison. She returned to
Hotchkiss and in 1948, she married Howard Wilson of
Hotchkiss. Her married life became that of a farm wife, keeping
the home while helping with the fruit orchards, livestock and
vegetable gardens. The Wilsons raised mostly apples and for
many years packed their own fruit at the Growers Trading
packing house in Hotchkiss. They had two children, Beverley
and Edwin.
Charlotte was active in her community. She served for decades
in the Harmony Club, a women’s club for the Hanson and
Powell Mesa community. She also volunteered at the county
fair and frequently entered prize-winning baked goods. During
her later years, she volunteered tirelessly at the Hotchkiss
Methodist Church’s Peace Circle Thrift Store.
She is survived by son and daughter, Edwin Wilson and
Beverley Dwire; son-in-law, Bruce Dwire; granddaughters,
Teresa Dwire-Elliott, Karen Dwire, Audrey Wilson-Williamso;
grandson, Justin Wilson, and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the
Hotchkiss Methodist Church Peace Circle or the HHS Alumni
Fund, c/o First State Bank of Hotchkiss.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on
Sunday, October 15 at 11:00 am at the Rogers Mesa Community
House near Hotchkiss.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor
Funeral Service and Crematory.
