Former Mesa resident, Jean Mathiesen, 93, Valentine, Nebraska,
died Oct. 9, 2017, in Valentine.
Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in
Valentine. Services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine.
Survivors include one son, Tom of Wallace, Nebraska; and one
daughter, Jill Schroeder of Grand Junction.

Jean Axel Mathiesen was born Nov. 19, 1923 in Tripp County, SD in the family home. He passed away on Oct. 9, 2017 in Valentine, NE after a one day illness. He was the fourth child and the third son of Alex Burt Mathiesen and Jennie Marie (Larson) Mathiesen. Two sisters were born after hi to complete the family. He attended school in Kapaha, SD.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943. Because of the allotment system he actually served in the US Army. He was stationed in German and France and was wounded in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the bronze star. In March of 1946 he returned to Valentine, NE to his new bride. He had married LeaBelle Hutchison on Aug. 11, 1945 while home on leave.
He tried many different jobs while living in Valentine. He worked at a creamery, had his own electrical business and even built a bridge. In 1956 he went to work for LandAir in Cheyenne, WY. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne. In 1958 he went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation in Kortes Dam, WY. He moved to Casper and Alcova, WY and finally to Mesa, CO where he finished his occupation as an electrician with the Bureau in 1985. He then started his second vocation as a rancher, first in Colorado and then in South Dakota.
In 1995 Jean and his wife bought a ranch in Lakeview, SD. They were there until 2013 when they moved to Valentine, NE because of her poor health.
Mr. Mathiesen was a 73 year member of the VFW. He was a 50 year Mason, President of the Mesa Community Club, a 70 year member of the IBEW. He was an EMT and was instrumental in starting the Ambulance service in Mesa, CO.
Jean is survived by his son, Tom Mathiesen (Edie) of Wallace, NE; daughter, Jill Schroeder (Dick) of Grand Junction, CO. Five grandchildren, Lynda Sutrina, Carrie Clairmont, Brett Bobbitt, Jennifer Marquardt and Sandra Wilke. He is also survived by 17 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, LeaBelle; son Edward and grandson, Brice Mathiesen; brothers, Harvey and Lee; sisters, Mildred Mathiesen, Janelle Lamprect and Carol Heine.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2:00 PM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine. Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was in charge of service arrangements.

Visitation will be on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 PM at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines.
