Longtime Grand Junction, Colorado resident, Raymond F. Baker,
passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017, at Larchwood
Inns in Grand Junction. He was 92 years old.
Ray was born December 8, 1924, to Morris Franklin and Stella
Rose Baker in Lamar, Colorado. He spent his childhood in and
attended school in Lamar. He had his seventeenth birthday the
day after Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. Like many of his
fellow students, he enlisted in the military. Ray served his country
in the US Army Air Corps in World War II. After his honorable
discharge, he returned to Lamar and graduated with the class
of 1944. He moved to Eads, Colorado and started Baker Oil
Company, which he owned and operated in Eads and Grand
Junction until his retirement in 1987.
In 1945, Ray married Maxine Osolin; four children were born
to this marriage. The marriage dissolved in 1967 and Ray relocated
to Grand Junction. On August 14, 1971, he married Hazel
Louise Moore. The couple shared 21 years of love and marriage
before Hazel passed away on June 19, 1993.
Ray belonged to Elks Lodge 575 and American Legion Post
211. He had been a private pilot; he enjoyed fishing, golf and
traveling, but most of all he loved and cherished time with his
family and friends.
Ray is survived by children, Karen (Don) Gifford, Marilyn
(Tom) Quinn, Ken (Deb) Baker, Lee Baker, Connie (Jerry)
Baptista, Georgiana (Rich) Weimer, Victor (Michelle) Moore,
Rocky Moore, and Robynn Moore (Kirk Knowles); 22 grandchildren;
25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Ray was quick to make friends, and he is survived by many of
them in Lamar, Eads and Grand Junction.
He was preceded in death by wife, Hazel; parents; a brother; a
sister, and his ex-wife, Maxine.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
Service and Crematory.
Memorial gifts may be made to Roice-Hurst Humane Society,
Food Bank of the Rockies – Western Slope, or HopeWest.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the wonderful
people at Larchwood Inns and HopeWest for their loving care
during his last months of life.
A celebration of Ray’s life and a private graveside service will
be held at a later date.
