Gunnar W. Simonsen passed away April 18, 2018 at home surrounded by the love of his family and friends after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 70.
Gunnar was born in Oslo, Norway and spent his early years in Feoy, Norway. He came to the U.S. with his parents and settled in Lake Telemark, NJ. Gunnar alternated attending schools in Morris County NJ and Norway, ultimately graduating from Morris Hills High School, in 1967.
Gunnar joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS America from ’67-71.
Upon returning from the Navy Gunnar worked as a carpenter in the Carpenters Local Union #254 and settled in Lake Telemark, NJ. There he started his family and eventually moved to Green Pond, NJ. In the late 1980’s Gunnar started his own carpentry business Nordic Wood serving Northern NJ.
In the mid-1990s Gunnar met his wife Linda, left Green Pond and moved to Fair Haven, NJ. They were married in 1995. In 1998 Gunnar and Linda moved to Steamboat Springs, CO & began Nordic Custom Constructors with Gunnar’s son, Eric. After retiring in 2009 Gunnar lived in Easton, MD and Port Hadlock, WA with his wife Linda.
Gunnar started each day with a smile and positive outlook. His joy was family and friends, a love of the sea and Norway, the beauty of nature and photographing as much of it as he could.
Gunnar is predeceased by his parents, Olav and Ingrid Simonsen and his son-in-law Micah Weissman. He is survived by his Wife Linda, children Eric (Deanna) of Steamboat Springs, CO and Kara Weissman of Little Falls, NJ and grandchildren Everett, Veronika and James.
