Dale W. McClaran March 5, 1920 - September 3, 2017
Dale W. McClaran, a long time resident of western Colorado, passed away in Vancouver, Washington, September 3, 2017, at the age of 97. Born in Corydon, Indiana he moved with his parents and younger sister to Denver, Colorado; the family eventually settled in the Carbondale area. It was in the Crystal River valley that Dale met his future wife, Marian Sampson. They were married in July 1941 and celebrated nearly 62 years together before Marian passed away in February 2003. They had a son, Larry (wife, Ladene and son, Dale R.) and daughter, Linda (husband, Kay and sons, Michael and Christopher). Also surviving are two great-granddaughters, Avery Rose (Dale R.) and Marian Elizabeth (Christopher). Dale joined the U.S. Army Air Corps (U.S. Air Force) shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He flew in the China/India/Burma WWII military theater making many harrowing flights to and from India over the Himalayas into China. He took great pride in his military service. After completing his active duty military service Dale and Marian and their son, Larry, settled in southern California, where their daughter, Linda was born. Dale maintained his Air Force rank as captain serving in the Air Force reserves for many years. His love of flying led him to a career with air traffic control; he was an air traffic controller and eventually became the assistant chief at the Oakland (California) airport. Upon his retirement he and Marian traveled throughout the western United States (including Alaska), Mexico and Canada. They eventually returned to their first home state of Colorado, settling on Log Hill Mesa in Ouray County. They named their Log Hill residence "Mar-Dale Ranch" and enjoyed the beautiful views of the San Juan Mountains for many years. Both Dale and Marian were active in their local community, serving and supporting the Colona Grange and the Fortuna Tierra Club (of Log Hill). They were also passionate square dancers, and long-served as officers with the Black Canyon Twirlers. They were both recognized and honored for their many years of service to the local and state square dancing organizations. No services will be held.
