John C. Schweitzer September 24, 1926 - September 23, 2017
John Schweitzer, formerly of Grand Junction, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2017 in The Woodlands, Texas. John was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Evelyn, in November 2015. John was born and raised in Yakima, Washington, where he met and ultimately married Evelyn Day in 1948. After serving honorably in the United States Navy as a radio technician during WWII, John enrolled in the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree in 1953 and was hired by the Boeing Company in Seattle. Five years later, John moved his family to San Mateo, California when he became a partner in Ultronix, Inc., an electronics manufacturing firm. Ultronix expanded its operations to Grand Junction in 1960 and the Schweitzer family again relocated so John could assume his position as Vice President and Chief of Engineering. John sold his interest in Ultronix in 1965 and became a partner in locally-owned Delta Products, Inc., which manufactured automotive electronic ignition systems. Following the death of his partner several years later, John became President and sole owner of Delta Products. At its peak, Delta Products employed approximately 500 local residents. John was a gifted electrical engineer and held several U.S. patents for electronic components. He was also an active member of the Grand Junction business community and became a passionate tennis player. Due to a downturn in the local economy and competition from imported electronics, John and Evelyn made the difficult decision to sell the assets of Delta Products in the early 1980s. They subsequently moved to Michigan and later, Wisconsin, where John held key positions as an electronic systems designer and consultant to several large manufacturing companies. John and Evelyn ultimately retired to The Woodlands, Texas where John continued to play tennis into his late 80s. John is survived by his children; Gail Schweitzer (Tom Scow) of Grand Junction; David (Kathy) Schweitzer of The Woodlands, Texas; and Janice Greene of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren Katie and Sara Greene of Seattle, Washington; Drew Godby of The Woodlands, Texas; and Ryan (Candice) Godby of The Woodlands, Texas; and great-grandchildren Dilynn, Jacob, and Madison Godby of The Woodlands, Texas. There will be no services at John’s request. For those who knew him, please remember John for his kind heart, generosity, and gentle spirit.
