Dr. Charles Marvin Cox May 5, 1932 - December 29, 2017
Dr. Charles Marvin Cox, of Delta, Colorado, 85, died at home of natural causes, surrounded by family. Marvin was born in Delta, Colorado, to Henry and Fern Cox. He graduated from Delta High School in 1950. Marvin attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, and then went on to earn a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1957. While at Creighton he met and married Camilla Kenworthy on August 1, 1953. Upon graduation from Creighton, Marvin joined his uncle, Dr. Marvin A. Cox, in his dental practice in Delta. Six months later, he was drafted into the United States Air Force where he served as a dentist for 30 years, retiring as Colonel. During his time with the USAF, he completed post graduate studies at University of Alabama Dental School in Birmingham, Alabama; was Chief of Prosthodontics at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana; served as the Director of the Area Dental Laboratory for the European Theater at the USAF Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany; was appointed as a Special Consultant to the Surgeon General for Europe; and returned to Barksdale AFB as Director of Area Dental Laboratory. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the American Prosthodontics Society, as well as a charter member of the Federation of Prosthodontics Societies. From 1984 to 1991 Marvin owned and operated an Apple computer store in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1991, Marvin and Camilla returned home to Delta. A member of St. Michael Catholic Church, he sang in the choir and served in various positions on the parish council. Marvin was a Fourth Degree Knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 65 years. He was also Secretary and Treasurer of the Delta Food Pantry. His favorite activities were performing in local theater groups, fly fishing, and driving the tractor at his son’s farm. Marvin is survived by his wife, Camilla; brother, Kenneth (Janet), from Grand Junction; sister-in-law, Kay, from Cortez, and aunt, Lucretia Cox, of Delta; eight children, Cindy Simpson from Houston, Texas; Kevin (Yvonne) from Denver, Colorado; Kelly (Stephanie) from Delta, Colorado; Carla Hauser (John) from Shreveport, Louisiana; Celeste Gardner (Joe) from Vancleave, Mississippi; Kris (Rachel) from Grand Junction, Colorado; Kerry from Shreveport, Louisiana, and Keith (Penny) from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Marvin has 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Fern (Hotchkiss) Cox; brother, Gordon, and son-in-law, Robert Simpson. Rosary will be on Thursday, January 4th at 6:00 p.m. and funeral Mass on Friday, January 5, at 10:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Delta, Colorado, Donations may be made in Marvin’s name to St. Michael Catholic Church, 628 Meeker St., Delta, Colorado 81416 or Delta Food Pantry, 628 Meeker St., Delta, Colorado 81416.
