Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 6A Obituary - December 12, 2017

Johanna “Hanni” Pfluger, of Cedaredge, passed away December 7, 2017. She was 84 years of age. A rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 13, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Cedaredge, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Albeiro HerreraCiro will preside. Johanna was born February 18, 1933, in Wostrowa, Germany (Sudetenland), now known as Ostrov, Czech Republic, to the late Wenzel and Hedwig (Fretschner) Waworka. Following the Potsdam Conference in 1945, Johanna’s family and as many as 500,000 other people were forced to leave their homes as refugees when territory lines changed from Sudetenland, Germany to Czechoslovakia. German authorities determined which families in Germany had sufficient home space to accommodate the incoming families from Sudetenland. As many as 30 people shared one room for eight weeks in Bavaria, Germany until placement could be made. When Johanna’s family was placed with a host family, they resided with the family for one year before settling in their own home in Augsburg, Germany. Johanna married Max Pfluger on November 8, 1953, in Markt Wald, Germany. In 1962, Johanna and Max decided to emigrate to the United States. On May 31, 1962, Johanna and Max arrived in San Francisco. Neither could speak English. Their strong will, work ethic, and belief in themselves carried them through this difficult time. Johanna loved her new country and enjoyed traveling and visiting many of its states. In 1972, she became a United States citizen. She worked for 30 years as a self-employed professional seamstress and interior decorator. In 1993, Johanna and Max retired and moved to Cedaredge. Johanna and Max celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2003. Max passed away February 8, 2004. Johanna is survived by her sister, Annie, and many nieces and nephews who all reside in Germany. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Johanna’s name to the Delta County Hospice, 195 Stafford Lane, PO Box 24, Delta, CO 81416. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory, Delta, CO.
