Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 8A Obituary - December 15, 2017

Matthew (Matt) Thomas Bruens was born Monday, December 8, 1997 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO. At an early age Matt developed a close affinity with Buzz Lightyear, spending his early years living and breathing his alter ego. His skiing ability at a young age was magnified by his Buzz wings as he worked tirelessly to successfully convince the coaches at Powderhorn Racing Club to let him on the ski racing team. Matt was the sweetest tempered baby ever born, and spent the rest of his too short life dedicated to bringing love and kindness to anyone he came in contact with. Matthew never had just friends, he was a “best friend” to many people. He was described by many as their “fixed point”. Always ready to help others, he brought the selfless and forgiving Lightyear spirit in an attempt to make the world a better place. Not satisfied improving just one world at a time, Matt spent many nerdy fandom hours attempting to do the same in the League of Legends universe, and other favorites such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Who, and Star Wars. As a professional gamer Matt was determined to be the best. Matt was active in his church, volunteering countless hours helping and mentoring kids and supporting those around him. Matt trusted his faith to get through life’s trials and tribulations from a young age and continuing into adulthood. Matt easily comforted the souls around him in a belief that all things can be done through Christ. Matt spent many days at his favorite place in the mountains where he was known as Sir Kle. Matt was at ease being one with God’s creation. Not ever wanting to hurt anything living Matt brought the same kind of caring to various wildlife considered to be scary by many in his family, comforting snakes and the like. Matt is survived by his parents, Melisa Bruens and Dennis Bruens; his brothers, Bryan (Maureen) Bruens, Christian Bruens (Jaime Duvall), JJ Bruens; sister, Lucy Bruens; grandparents, Dave and Judy Bussert, and Anneke Bruens; great-grandmother, Virginia Menard; aunt Debbie and uncle Landen Brolien, uncle Richard and aunt Angelique Bruens; cousins, Bryce Brolien, Julius and Anne-Sophie Bruens; nephew, David Bruens and niece, Ellie Duvall; “Aunt” Carrie (Bunni) Erickson; and many friends whom he considered his family. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Peter Bruens. Visitation will take place December 16, 2017 at CallahanEdfast Mortuary from 9-11AM; funeral service to follow at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, the Matthew Bruens Fund has been established at Grand Junction Church of Christ to help children around the community to infinity and beyond!
