Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 4A Obituary - December 18, 2017

Tom passed away of natural causes on December 10, 2017, at the age of 55. He was born June 15, 1962, in Denver, Colorado to Larry and Marguerite Dowd as the fourth child in a family of eight children. When he was three years old, the family moved to Grand Junction. Along with his siblings, Tom attended St. Joseph’s grade school and later graduated from Grand Junction High School. Shortly after high school, Tom married Laura Boddy. Together they had three sons, Thomas Brendan Jr., Michael David and Lawrence Tannon. Tommy lives in Durham, North Carolina, Michael and his wife, Melissa, also live in Durham and Tannon lives in Fallbrook, California. Tom and Laura later divorced but Laura always remained an important part of the Dowd family. During his lifetime, Tom joined the National Guard as a combat engineer and was deployed to Panama as part of a bridge building unit. Tom’s job was to establish satellite communications. In 1998 Tom met and married Susan Hopf. Although they later divorced, they remained best friends until his passing. For the last ten years, Tom worked for Dan Penny as a Facilities Maintenance Technician. During this time Tom also willingly took on the responsibility of being his mothers caregiver. Tom always considered this his greatest privilege. He was an avid reader and he and his mom always looked forward to the latest best seller. Landscaping and gardening were his favorite past time. He loved plants and flowers and always insisted on giving you a cutting off a plant when you stopped by. Tom’s unexpected passing has left an empty spot in all our hearts as we remember his kind and generous nature. Tom is survived by his first wife, Laura and their children, Tommy, Michael (Melissa) and Tannon; his second wife, Susan and her grandchildren, Katie and Dominic and her greatgrandchild, Oden. He is also survived by his mother, Marguerite; sister, Shelly Smith (Rod) of Loma; brothers, Kelly (Karen), Jim, Dan and Joe, all of Grand Junction. He is also survived by his uncles, Dennis Dowd of Denver, CO, and Ken Dowd (Janette) of Issaquah, WA; aunt, Clara Madden of Lompoc, CA, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lawrence and Margaret Dowd; his father, Larry Dowd and two younger siblings, Andrew and Christopher. “A mind wishes to be itself, amid all clutter and stink. Expressions of one’s ability to rise above reality..yet focus on what is. Impressions of the life we live, shared in order to give, with peace of mind the only given” By Tom Dowd Services will be Tuesday, December 19th, 2:30 p.m., at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.
