Joe passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 19, 2017, at HopeWest Hospice after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born on July 17, 1951, in Rifle, CO to Richard and Othlie Simms, one of ten children, a large and very close family. He spent most of his life in the Rifle and New Castle area and had lived in Grand Junction since 1984. Joe was a graduate of Rifle High School. He loved life and was the kindest person one could have the privilege of knowing, always there if you needed his help for anything. Joe seemed to know everyone, we never went anywhere he didn’t bump into someone he knew, which brought with it many great stories. He loved old country music and working on old cars. Joe loved family, and was a huge teaser; his nieces and nephews will attest to his orneriness. He enjoyed his career as a crane operator for Sterling Crane and the Local 9 Union and had recently retired. Joe is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters, Robin (Jered) Wilkinson of Gunnison and Amanda (Tim) Kuchyt of Grand Junction; his granddaughter, Reigan Wilkinson of Grand Junction; two grandsons, Jonathan and Jedidiah Wilkinson of Gunnison; a brother, Earl "Rocky" Simms of New Castle; three sisters, Geraldine Jewell of Rifle; Shirley (Kenny) Hutchings of Silt, and Margie (Ronnie) Maynard also of Silt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant siblings; brother, Dick Simms; and sisters, Sally Elmore and Stella Aldridge. A celebration of Joe’s life will be this summer in the mountains where his ashes will be scattered per his wishes. To honor Joe’s memory, memorial donations may be made to HopeWest Hospice of the Grand Valley, 3090B North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506. Brown’s Cremation and Funeral Service has been entrusted with arrangements.
