Helen Elizabeth Shults, born Helen Callahan, passed away January 13, 2018, at Mesa Manor Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on March 4, 1927, in Austin, Colorado, to Clarence and Minnie Callahan. She is a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution with six Revolutionary War heroes in her ancestry. She is the 19th great-granddaughter of the King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce. Helen graduated from Delta High School and was married after WWII. She worked at the Driver’s License Bureau in Grand Junction and for the National MS Society. When she retired, she became an accomplished oil painter and loved to knit. She made afghans or baby blankets for everyone she knew. Everyone who worked at her favorite restaurants received one. She made hundreds. She loved the Lord, and read the Holy Bible from cover to cover every year. She is survived by her husband, Roy C. "Frank" Shults; son, Roy H. "Mike" Shults and his wife, Cindy; brother, Wayne "Corky" Callahan and his wife and family; grandchildren, Tyson and Shane; great-grandchildren, Preston and Shaylene; and dozens of people she looked on as children in her heart. Her older brother, Willard Callahan, preceded her in death. Services will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 2:00 p.m.
