Lauritz "Gene" Dahlby May 3, 1941 - March 23, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Lauritz "Gene" Dahlby announces his sudden passing, on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the age of 76 years young. Gene was born May 3, 1941 in Lake Mills, Iowa, and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1959. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served three years before moving to Wyoming and Colorado. He lived there for 40 years while raising his family, and then retired from over the road trucking after driving over 4.6 million miles. He then moved back to his family farm in Iowa in 2000, eventually settling into his home south of Emmons, MN. He was very active in the Emmons, MN American Legion, having served as commander for three years and helping to grow the Legion kitchen, which meant a great deal to him. He was also a member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church and was an active member of various boards, and One In Christ council. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marilee; his mother, Grace Dahlby; children, Candi (Jerald) Hawkins, Staci (Kevin) Case, Kelly (Kent) Balog, Colleen (Eric) Pratt, and Sonia Dahlby, and his brother, Edward Dahlby. "Big Tall Grandpa" will also be fondly remembered by his seven grandchildren, Jackie, Jessica, Duke, Tanner, Cassidy, Tyler, and Erica. Gene had an infectious laugh that couldn’t be ignored, and had many stories to tell of his younger years. He never met a stranger, and all who met him were made to feel at ease instantly. He also had a love for classic cars. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all those who knew him. A Funeral Service, in memory of Gene, was held on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church rural Northwood. The Emmons American Legion presented the Honor Guard.
