Lena Martinez, 88, Grand Junction, died Jan. 20, 2018, at Eagle Ridge of Grand Valley. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. Survivors include one son, John F. Jr. of Grand Junction; three daughters, Victoria Steiner of Chula Vista, California, and Patricia Gallegos and Betty Gallegos, both of Grand Junction; one sister, Virginia Rascon of Grand Junction; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial contributions to the St. Mary’s Foster Grandparents Program, 2635 N. Seventh St., Grand Junction 81501.

Lena Martinez July 26, 1929 - January 20, 2018
Our beloved mother, Lena Martinez, left us on Saturday, January 20, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. During her final days she was surrounded by her children, one remaining sister, Virginia Montoya, and several of her grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Martinez Sr.; parents, Samuel and Maclovia Montoya; four sisters, and one brother. Mom will be missed by her children, Victoria Steiner, Patricia Gallegos, John F. Martinez, Jr., and Betty Gallegos, and her many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lena worked for many years as a Foster Grandmother and when she wasn’t working she was enjoying camping, fishing, and hunting. Mom will be remembered by her friends and family for her great sense of humor. Even though Mom knew that eating the wrong foods was not good for her she had her own ideas about what she wanted to eat. It was common to feel frustrated by mom and her stubborn ways but in the end she would come up with something funny to make us laugh and forget what we were frustrated about. The family has such fond memories of mom getting together with her sister, Aunt Mary, and other family members to sing in Spanish, knowing it would always turn into the best house party. We dearly love you mom and we will always remember and miss you. You are now in heaven with your husband, family and friends making your own music and making everyone laugh. Rosary Sunday, January 28, 2018, 7:00 p.m., viewing Sunday 5 - 7:00. Mass at St. Joseph’s church 11:00 a.m. Burial following at VA cemetery.
