Steamboat Pilot and Today - September 10, 2018

Phyllis Jean Allen resident of Steamboat Springs passed away on Sunday morning Sept. 9, 2018. Services will be held 11:00am, Friday, Sept. 14, 2018 at the United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Routt County Humane Society PO Box 776090 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477. Yampa Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Phyllis was born in Osborne, Kansas to her parents Roy Stehley and Florence (Koch) Stehley. She and her older sister Pat (Stehley) Wanek grew up in many locations throughout Kansas as they moved numerous times. She graduated high school in 1944 Valedictorian of her Wilson, Kansas class.

Shortly after high school graduation she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. In 1947 she came out to Steamboat Springs to work at the Routt County National Bank. She lived with her Uncle Jack and Aunt Pearl Stehley and her cousin Carol Sue Stehley.

July 15, 1949 she married William L. Allen, oldest son of George and Faye (Tuttle) Allen who lived just down the street from the Stehley’s.

Phyllis was active in the community and a member of P. E. O., Beta Sigma Phi, Ladies Recreational Club (LRC) and the United Methodist Church.

She was known throughout the community as a dedicated mother and homemaker with a caring, kind hearted and generous spirit. Phyllis enjoyed horseback riding, socializing with friends and family, playing bridge, knitting, writing poetry and had a huge affection for animals. She maintained a wonderful, supportive and kind sense of humor and a quick wit.

Bill and Phyllis were owners of Allen’s clothing Store which was opened by George and Bill Allen in 1949 and sold to Tod and Robin Allen in 1984.

Phyllis is survived by her sons Lon (Eileen) Allen and Tod (Robin) Allen, and daughter Gina (Mark) Walker. Her grandchildren are Anya (Josh) Bryant, Scott Allen, Thomas Allen, Kris Allen, Jenny Allen, Mariah Walker and Trace Walker. Her Great Grandson is John Crosby Bryant. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Allen, her grandsons Michael and Bradley Allen and her sister Pat Wanek.

Services are being held Friday September 14th at 11:00 AM at United Methodist Church where she was a member for over 70 years.
