Alice Lorraine Heise was born on June 22, 1923, to Clarence and Ruth Heise in Pender, Nebraska. She was raised until the age of 14 on various farms in Nebraska with her brother and two sisters. She then went to live with hergrandmother andstepgrandfather in Wahoo, Nebraska to attend high school. It was in Wahoo during World War II that she met a young soldier, Bob Spengler, who was hitchhiking back to his base. A driving rainstorm forced two soldiers to shelter at the USO that day. Alice and her best friend met them there that evening. Less than a year later, on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, Bob and Alice married. They were both quick to inform everyone that they married on Easter, not April’s Fool Day. The other couple who met that evening also married. Bob and Alice arrived in Grand Junction in 1947 for a job at the Weather Bureau. Both of them lived out their lives in the Grand Valley. They raised four children: Gayle, Bruce, Eric and Lisa. Alice was known for her beautiful handwork. She made quilts; knitted and crocheted; stitched pictures. She also enjoyed being either the president or treasurer of various organizations. She served both her church and Home Owners Association well into her 80’s. Alice passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018, with all of her children and her granddaughter at her bedside. She had said that she wanted to be able to say, "Goodbye" to her family when the time came and she did. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Robert Spengler; parents, Clarence and Ruth Heise, and her siblings, Marvin and Elaine Heise, Evelyn Hinrichs, and Audrey Hansen. She is survived by all of her children, Gayle, Bruce, Eric (Pamela) and Lisa (Karen); grandchildren, Brett and Colin (Errin) Vito, Meagan Kaus, Jacob and Jason Spengler, and greatgrandchildren, Kailey and James Kaus and Eden Spengler, and many nieces and nephews. Her family rejoices that Alice has completed her journey and now is home in heaven. A funeral service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church at 840 North 11th St. in Grand Junction at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23. Viewing at 1:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens in Grand Junction.
