Harold Loyd Mowery September 21, 1921 - March 25, 2018
Harold Loyd Mowery passed away Sunday morning, March 25, 2018, in Grand Junction, Colorado, with his loving wife, Eileen, and son, Greg, by his side. He was 96 years young. Harold was born September 21, 1921, in Ullon, Illinois. He graduated from high school were he lettered in baseball, basketball and track. After high school he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and worked for Granite City Steel, and played AAA Baseball. Harold tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals, and made the team, but WWII broke out. Harold enlisted in the Army Air Corp, which became the U.S. Air Force. He was a Tail Gunner on the B-29 Bomber attached to the 555th Bomber Squadron, plane number 4131, and was the last living survivor of the Atom Bomb Squadron, which ended the Korean War. After serving his country, Harold settled in Denver, Colorado with his loving wife, Eileen, where they adopted three children, one foster child, and helped raise two grandchildren. Harold’s passion was commercial refrigeration which he worked in for 42 years. He worked all over Colorado and Wyoming, building King Sooper, Albertson’s, and Safeway Stores. Harold installed the refrigeration in the first two Safeway and Albertson’s stores in Grand Junction. He leaves his loving wife, Eileen; sons, Greg and Michael, and grandchildren, Danny, Shanna and Michael Jr. He was preceded in death by daughter, Debbie, in 2012. Eileen is 92 and is still living in the house they built. Services will be held April 16, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Palisade, Colorado. Interment services will follow at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00 p.m. The family prefers memorials to the VA of Grand Junction Colorado. The family would like to thank Betsy and Val from VA Home Health Care and Brenan of Comfort Keepers. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palisade Funeral Home.
