Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 5B Obituary - March 31, 2018

Donald Frank Thompson, 87, of Grand Junction, CO passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 28, 2018. Don was born in Grand Junction, CO, October 5, 1930, to Frank and Elsie (Walz) Thompson. He graduated from Central High School before serving in the U. S. Navy as an E3 Gunner Mate. A hard-worker and outdoorsman, Don was a heavy equipment operator and built roads to the uranium mines in the Uncompahgre, poured concrete to build Vega Dam, and was involved with the construction of I70. After he retired, Don helped build many of the ATV trails on the Grand Mesa that he loved to enjoy with his 4-wheeler club. He loved to fish, hunt, and pan for gold, and enjoyed time spent in Alaska and Hawaii. Don loved life, loved his family, and died a happy man. He found fulfillment by creating many memories teaching those he loved about the things he loved; hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, and leatherworking. He instilled his family with a great work ethic and strong values. Don was preceded in death by his parents and wife. A beloved patriarch, Don is survived by his children, Donald R. (Celia) Thompson, Ronald (Alanna) Thompson, Randall Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Dawna Rascon, and Dustin (Tina) Thompson; step-sons, Shane Whittaker and Ronnie Whittaker, sister, Eva (Jim) Smith. Don’s legacy will continue through his 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and four great-greatgrandchildren. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at Martin Mortuary Monday, April 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Orchard Mesa Cemetery. We are blessed that he was ours. Many special thanks to the staff at Mantey Heights Rehabilitation and Care Center, who made his last earthly home a place that he loved to be.
