Margaret Bogner Hagaman, 86, Grand Junction, died May 8, 2018, at the Colorado State Veterans Home in Rifle. Services will take place at 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. Survivors include one son, John of West Hills, California; one daughter, Heather Hagaman of Reston, Virginia; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Margaret "Gret" Bogner Hagaman, 86, a loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, friend, world traveler, and long time resident of Grand Junction, passed away after a brief illness on May 8, 2018. Her last days were spent with her children, John and Heather Hagaman, in Rifle, Colorado at a Veterans Nursing home. Gret was born in Los Angeles, California to the late Franz and Margrit Bogner. She attended St. Mary’s School and Manhasset High School, Long Island; attended Pembroke College in Brown University, and received her degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida in 1953. In 1954, Gret was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. An interesting story that Gret reported is that during WWII, women Marines could only wear a shade of lipstick that matched the red tassels on their hat, so Elizabeth Arden decided to produce a lipstick for them. "Montezuma Red. I was thrilled Dad made it ", said Gret, whose father was the head chemist with Elizabeth Arden, and also created a perfume for Marines when Gret was commissioned called "Golden Bars." Gret loved the USMC and enjoyed working as an Inspector-Instructor Women Marine dispersing officer. As a first lieutenant, she met the love of her life, Capt. Harry Hagaman in Denver, and married him in December 1956. Gret left the USMC at the rank of Captain in 1958 and spent the next 32 wonderful years in service to the US Marine Corps, living all over, enjoying places like Naples, Italy and Hawaii. Having moved every several years, Gret always got involved with helping others and gave hundreds of hours to the NavyMarine Corps Relief Society. After a most distinguished career, BGen. Hagaman and Gret retired in 1982 to their home in Fairfax, Virginia and subsequently moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. They spent their retirement years traveling far and wide, cherishing time with family and nurturing grandchildren throughout their endeavors. Gret and Harry also got involved with helping veterans and Gret volunteered many hours for the Senior and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) group. In one news release, Gret said, "I enjoy volunteering here at the Grand Junction Police Station, as a member of SALT. All the officers are wonderful and it gives you an idea of what is going on in the community." Gret had a great sense of humor and was never at a loss for words. She and Harry spent their last years at the Commons of Hilltop and continued to enjoy life. They never retired, they just kept on serving. Gret was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harry. She is survived by her children, Heather Hagaman of Reston, Virginia, and John Hagaman of West Hills, California; grandchildren, Elise, J.T., Caed and Amy, and great-grandchild, Briar. The family would like to thank the staff of the Commons at Hilltop for their exemplary services, the Grand Junction Veterans Hospital staff and hospice workers, and the angels at Rifle Veterans Nursing home. A committal service will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2018, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway in Grand Junction, with full military honors accorded by a Marine Corps Honor Guard Detail and the Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard. Afterwards, there will be a reception at the Commons of Hilltop, 625 27 1/2 Rd., in their Garden room from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Women Marines Association at womenmarines.org/donation.
