SWALLOWED BY THE FLOOD

Man and Horse Find Watery Graves in Eagle River. About 6 o'clock on last Sunday evening a drowning occurred in the Eagle river at Astor flat, at the lower end of the canon. A foot bridge had been used by the contractors in crossing the river between the camp at the flat and the work on the grade in the canon. The bridge was used for both men and horses. John Sanchez, a Mexican, while returning from work and leading a horse , lost his lifeWhile crossing the bridge the horse balked, became unruly and a stringer of the bridge broke and both man and horse were dropped into the raging torrent of the river. No assistance could be given as the swift current carried both away before those in the vicinity realized what had happened. The body of the man was seen to pass underneath the new county wagon bridge about half a mile below the scene of the accident, and the swift water had divested it of all clothing. Word was telegraphed to points down stream and a posse of men turned out and searched the stream until 3 o'clock in the morning without success. At last reports the body of neither man or horse had been found. The horse was white in color. Sanchez was about 28 years of age, and nothing is known about him or where he came from by the contractors or men at the camp.
