STILL ANOTHER VICTIM

Another drowning occurred at the scene of the Colorado Central Power company's work at Shoshone, in the Grand River canon last Friday. The attempt was being made to stretch a cable across the river just above the falls where the company expects to build a dam. To accomplish this it was necessary to stretch a rope across the river with which the cable could be pulled

across. Two of the workmen, Max Donner and D. W. Guy, volunteered to take the rope and row with it across the stream, the rope being payed out as they went. To insure safety a guy rope was fastened to the boat and held by men on the bank so that the boat and occupants could be pulled ashore in case anything should go wrong. When in about mid-stream a floating log struck the boat and capsized it. Both men were thrown into the raging torrent. Guy attempted to swim out but was carried over the rapids and lost sight of by the men on the shore. The upturned boat was pulled toward the shore with Donner underneath it. When near the shore he sank and Superintendent J.F. Klaner, at the risk of his own life, plunged into the stream and succeeded in rescuing the drowning man. The body of Guy lodged on an island about 11 miles below Ihe scene of the accident, and at last reports its recovery had been impossible on account of the swift current. Guy had been employed by the company but about a week and his relatives are believed to reside somewhere in Kansas. Later—A rise in the water of the river swept the body from the island and it has not been recovered. Mrs. Daisy Murphy, of Leon, Kansas, a sister of the drowned man, is at Glenwood Springs hopeful of recovering the remains of her brother. Guy was 24 years of age and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
