Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 5B Obituary - July 4, 2018

Virginia Alberta Meek, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 28, 2018, at her home in Grand Junction. She was born October 18, 1923, at Wallace Creek in Grand Valley, CO, to Ben and Ella Ellithorpe. Virginia’s father died young and she helped raise her two younger sisters, Helen and Bobby. She never said she was "tasked" with helping raise them, she always said she was "honored." They were best friends. On September 19, 1941, she married the love her life, Huburt Meek, in Eagle. Six years later their first son, Kelly, was born. They went on to have four amazing children whom they loved unconditionally; Kelly, Sandy, Mike and Susan. The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, were Virginia’s world. She passed away in the comfort of knowing they cared for her at home until the end. Virginia was blessed with one of the best senses of humor on the planet, something she passed on to her kids and grandkids. She loved a good joke and loved a good practical joke even better. Her motto was to laugh every day, enjoy life, and to surround herself with young people "because old people are boring." When Huburt passed away in 2008, Virginia inherited the title of "General Meek" and assumed the role of the head of the family, something she was proud of. She defined "matriarch." She loved nothing more than when she had the entire family in one place, preferably on the back patio of their home in Grand Junction. When one spoke of going to "The House," they knew it meant Huburt and Virginia’s place. Virginia enjoyed bowling and belonged to a lady’s league for years. Her biggest love was dancing, and she always dreamed of being a professional dancer one day. Virginia was a natural at dancing, from the Foxtrot to a good Waltz. She also spent countless hours supporting Huburt in his philanthropic endeavors, going to kids, grandkids and great-grandkids’ sporting events, reading and watching her "programs" on TV. She was a huge proponent of taking a good nap as well as sleeping in. You knew to never call the house before 9 a.m., or between 1-2 p.m., because she’d be asleep. Of course, this helped fuel her evenings which lasted well past the 10 o’clock news and late shows. Because as she said, "that’swhen the night was just getting started." This trait has proudly been passed on to all the Meek kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Although she was an excellent cook, she never actually cared for cooking which may explain why Huburt, Sandy and Susan were such good cooks. When she got a hankering for making her famous candy, people would line up for her peanut brittle, English Toffee and fudge recipes. Regardless, her kitchen was the center of the game when family was over, generally with Virginia sitting on her stool at the end of the kitchen enjoying every minute of the chaos. Virginia is survived by children, Kelly (Karen) Meek of Steamboat Springs; Sandy Intfen of Fort Collins; Mike Meek of Grand Junction, and Susan (Ken) Sodowsky of Cedaredge; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Helen Pfost of Grand Junction. She is preceded in death by husband, Huburt Meek; sister, Bobby Clem, and son-in-law, George Intfen. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to her longtime HopeWest CNA, Kelsey, Jessie, Kim, and all the other staff at Hospice as well as all the private caregivers who made it possible to live her last years right where she was the happiest, at "The House." We will all miss you Ginny! A family graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, at Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction. A celebration of Virginia’s amazing life will be held at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, August 11, at 708 Galaxy Dr., Grand Junction. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in memory of Huburt and Virginia Meek, care of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction, CO 81505.
