Joe Crabtree, Whitewater resident for 30 years, passed peacefully on April 10, 2018, with family by his side at the age of 84 years old, at HopeWest. Joe was raised in Freeport, OH on a farm where he worked hard and went to school. At the age of 16 he went into the U.S. Army P.F.C. and was sent to Korea. He had great friends in the Army. His sister married one of them in West Virginia. Joe married Thelma Edie of Wayneright, OH. They moved to Orville, OH where he was a mechanic. He always had a race car. He would load up family and friends and go racing! In 1975 the family moved to Yuma, AZ for a short time. In 1979 Joe came to Grand Junction. He was still a mechanic. He was always out and about, and met so many people. Everyone knew him from someone or somewhere. He loved going out for breakfast with friends and going dancing at JJ’s Bar and other places around town. Joe got back into racing with the help of his son, Scott; friends, Carl, Troy, Benny, Casey, Vance, Steve, Steve Jr., Billy; lots of others and his grandson, Hosea. He appreciated all the help from auto parts houses, sponsors and friends. He loved his race fans! Joe leaves behind daughter, Cathy Crabtree of Glenwood Springs; son, Allen Scott Crabtree of Clifton; ex-wife, Thelma Crabtree of Grand Junction; a sister in Ohio; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers of Ohio; three sisters of Ohio, and one daughter. Joe was laid to rest at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the wall C-15-28 by the pond. Joe put his whole heart into everything he did. He was a Hero to many. He enjoyed racing cars, dancing, and good music. He always said, "The main thing is...don’t get excited..." Bye, Joe! Have fun racing in heaven.
