Richard J. Schwan, age 81, passed away peacefully in Grand Junction, Colorado in the early morning of July 3, 2018. Richard is survived by his four children, Stephan, Aric, Michelle and Janene. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Born to Chief Petty Officer USN, Herman Schwan and his wife Anna, Richard was one of three children and is survived by his sisters, Margaret and Mary. He grew up in the Seattle, Washington area, graduated from Seattle University in 1959, with a Military Science degree and was immediately commissioned as an officer into the United States Army. Richard Schwan married his college sweetheart, Jeannette Gutierrez, who was his life partner until she passed away from cancer. Richard served in the US military with distinction, and was honorably discharged from the Army. Settling in the Grand Junction area, Mr. Schwan worked a number of jobs and volunteer positions. Many will remember Richard as the Scoutmaster of Troop 352, others will remember him from his time with the Grand Junction Police Department. He also worked in Saudi Arabia as the Project Manager of the Royal Clinics. One of Richard’s greatest passions was military and western history, he volunteered for many years at the museum of Western Colorado and was known internationally for his expertise in appraising military and western artifacts. Mr. Schwan was a kind and generous person who in the last years of his life took pleasure from trying to brighten the day of everyone he came in contact with, often by telling a joke, gifting a special coin, sharing a picture or quote that he hoped would bring some comfort, or a smile to the person he was giving it to. While he outlived many of his good friends, those whom he leaves behind and came in contact with will remember him and his stories fondly. There will be a Remembrance Mass for Richard this Sunday, July 29, 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 230 N. 3rd Street. On Monday, July 30, at 10:00 a.m., Richard will be given a full honors military burial at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway. All those who knew him are welcome to attend.
