Robert George Smith July 12, 1929 - April 6, 2018
Robert George Smith "Bob" was born on July 12, 1929, in Hempstead, Long Island, New York, and departed this life on April 6, 2018. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Alexanderina Smith (nee Reid), formally of London, England, who passed away on October 15, 2006, of West Nile Encephalitis in Grand Junction. He is also predeceased by his father, George A. Smith; stepmother, Frieda H. Smith of Rockville Centre, NY; mother, Hedwig I. Rehberg; step-father, Henry J. Rehberg of Lakeland, Florida, and younger brother, Melvin Karl Smith. Bob is survived by his daughter, Deborah Ciavarella; sons, Gregory Smith and Richard Smith; sister, Dorothy E. Ryf; brother, George A. Smith; grandsons, Daniel and Timothy Ciavarella, and Joseph Closs, and three great-grandchildren. He was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps as Staff Sergeant. He served at the Naval Headquarters and American Embassy in London, England, and the American Embassy in Paris, France. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Bob retired from the Hempstead Police Department, NY. He was past President of the Police Benevolent Association, past President of the North Shore Kiwanis Club of Glenwood Landing, NY; former member of the Glenwood Landing Fire Department, NY. Bob served as a Deputy Sheriff in Sullivan County, NH. He was a 60-plus Life Member of the American Legion Post #390 in Hempstead, NY. The family would like to thank Matthew McGraw, NPC, and Anne Siler, M.D. for their attentive care, and the wonderful staff of HopeWest Hospice and Larchwood Inns for the compassionate and loving care provided during his final days. Special thank you to Bob’slifelong friend, Ken Morton, and his Fourth Wednesday Lunch Bunch. Memorial contributions can be made in Robert’s name to HopeWest Hospice, 3090B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506. Private interment was held at the Veteran’sMemorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, CO.
