Death of a Pioneer

Basalt and Eagle county lost one of the most highly respected and most beloved women on May 21 , 1927 , Mrs . Daniel Shehl answered the call of her Maker and passed to the great beyond . Born at Plattsville, Wis., September 6 , 1842 , Emma Davis Robison was 84 years , 8 months and I8 days of age at the time of her death. Married to Daniel Shehi at Kelthsburg . III ., September 22 , 1859 , she and her husband moved to Kansas during the early days of the Civil war, when that state was torn with strife and war. In 1885 they came to Aspen , Colo ., where they made there home until 1890 , when they moved to the ranch home in Shehi Park . Her husband died in July 1904 , and later Mrs . Shehi went to live on Missouri Heights with her son. Fred Shehi , and last fall became a resident of Basalt . The deceased was a highly educated , talented lady , who numbered her friends by the score . She always led a devout Christian life , and was active In religious , social and club affairs of the community . She had been a member of the Sorosis Clu , b of Basalt for fifteen years .

The funeral was held flom the Methodist church in Basalt May 22 , Mrs . John Beck of Aspen conducting the Christian Science service ; and the body of the beloved pioneer woman was laid to rest in the Basalt cemetery . The services were attended by a large concourse ot sorrowing-friends , a choir , led by Mrs . J . W Deane of Aspen and Mrs . C . A . Peet of Basalt singing the beautiful songs , No Night There , , and Thou Art Our Father . The pall bearers ot her old neighbors were Alfred Sloss , Alvin Sloss . Phil Smith , Frank L . Paddock , Austin Downev . Besides the many friends she leaves one son , Fred Shehl , and one sister , Mrs . Cornelia Willits , both of the Basalt neighborhood , to mourn her death .

Mr . and Mrs . H . P . Van Horn and daughter , Mable , were over from the ranch at McCoy Wednesday .
