Caryl Whipple Smith , known only as Hog Smith to most of those who know him in these parts , died at his home in Denver the fore part of last week , and was buried in the Fairmount cemetery in Denver . Wednesday , July 27 . . Smith was a surveyor by profession , which hs followed at Leadville in 1879 when he first went to that camp . He came to Red Cliff in 1837 , where he later became manager of the Ground Hog min « , and for a tinie was in charge of the Iron Mask mine . He made money at mining on Battle Mountain , and when he retired from Red Cliff took _-jp the ranch which he later sold to Jerry Mahoney on tlie Eagle river near Avon . Some twenty years ago he moved to Denver , where he had been a citizen up to the time of his death last week . For many years he made his home in Denver at the St . James hotel , where he became a familiar figure to Eagle county people visiting the state capital
