Alivs D. Fetter, age 88, of Glade Park, died September 9, 2018, at Larchwood Inns. Alvis was born at Harris, Iowa to Dewey and Goldy Fetter, his natural parents, and was fourth of five sons in the close knit and loving family. The family moved to Colorado in 1931, to Two Buttes, and to the Grand Junction area in 1936. Alvis entered school at Fruitvale and then graduated from GJHS in 1949. He was active in football and wrestling at GJHS. He was selected on the All State football team in 1948, and was the State Wrestling champion, at 175 lbs., in 1948 and 1949. Upon graduation, Alvis attended Colo A&M, now Colorado State University, on a combined football and wrestling grant-in-aid. Family circumstances brought him back to Grand Junction where he attended Mesa Jr. College before entering the Army for the Korean War. During his tour of duty, he was at Ft. Lewis Washington before going to Germany and then Korea. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea earning the combat infantry badge among other awards. He was selected to play football on military teams in Germany and at Ft. Lewis during his three year tour. Following the military, Alvis returned to Mesa College to compete in wrestling and finish the Jr. College program. He then transferred to the University of Wyoming to compete and finish his degree with honors in education. While at Mesa, he met and in 1954, married Sharon Zinn, who was also attending Mesa. During the marriage four children were born, Gay Lynn Hoffman of Silverdale, WA; Elizabeth Irene Harris of Grand Junction; Alison Deanna Geer of Grand Junction, and Kelley Vincent Fetter of Placitas, NM. Divorce occurred in 1972. Alvis graduated from Wyoming University in 1956 with a BS degree in science and education. In 1958 he graduated from the University with the MA Degree in school administration. Following two years of teaching and coaching at Northeastern Jr. College in Sterling, CO, he returned to Grand Junction to teach and coach at GJHS. Seven years later he became a District 51 administrator and retired in 1986 after 30 years of teaching and coaching and finishing 18 years as Principal of Central High School. Following retirement at Central High School, the library/classroom building was dedicated as Alivs D. Fetter Hall. In 1980, he married the former Judy Marler, also from Grand Junction. Together they enjoyed traveling, family events, and caring for each other over the following years. She continues to reside at The Commons in Grand Junction, and no children were born to this marriage. Mr. Fetter is survived by a younger brother, Gary Fetter of Albany, OR; several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In accordance with our Dad’s nurturing nature and his never wanting to be a burden, he wrote this obituary in 1993, revised it in 2006, and it remains as he wrote it. Cremation has taken place and respecting his wishes, there will be only a family service. A memorial reception will be held October 7, 2018 from 2 4:00 p.m. at Fetter Hall located on the Central High School Campus. Memorial contributions may be sent to Central High School, Alvis D. Fetter Memorial Scholarship, 550 Warrior Way, Grand Junction, CO 81504-6401 or to the Roice-Hurst Humane Society, 362 28 Road, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
