Dr. Terry H. Musgrave May 26, 1940 - October 3, 2018
Dr. Terry H. Musgrave, optometrist, and resident of Grand Junction for 52 years, passed away on October 3, 2018, at HopeWest. Terry was born May 26, 1940, in Evansville, Indiana, to Basil H. and Lillie Shumaker Musgrave. He grew up in Decatur, Illinois. He played basketball as a freshman at the University of Illinois before earning his Doctorate of Optometry at Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL in 1963. Following Optometry school, Terry entered the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He was a member of the Medical Corps at Fairchild Air Force Base from 1963-1966. He and Mary Day Kilborn were married March 14, 1964, in Decatur, IL. They moved to Grand Junction in September 1966, where Terry joined the optometric partnership of Drs. Broderson, Kendrick and Musgrave. He practiced optometry in Grand Junction for 38 years, establishing his own practice on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Optometric Association and held several COA committee positions regarding professionalism, ethics and advancement of optometry in Colorado. In 1972, Dr. Musgrave, as an Air Force reservist, became a liaison office for the United States Air Force Academy’s Office of Admissions. He served 19 years in that capacity and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal upon his retirement in 1990 for the exemplary group of cadet candidates he identified for the Academy, as well as another group of young men and women he recruited for USAF ROTC scholarships. Terry loved people and their stories. He enjoyed getting to know his patients and many became life-long friends. He was a talented coach, working with his sons’ youth basketball and baseball teams. He initiated an interest among other youth basketball father-coaches in establishing the Mesa County AAU Basketball program for junior-high boys and girls in the early 1980’s. Terry put his family before all else. No one disputed his love for his wife, sons and their families. He enjoyed making memories with family members through stories, trips, games and watching their various academic, athletic and dramatic performances. He is survived by his wife, Mary Day; sons, Bill (Neely) of Denver and Atlanta, and Doug (Amy) of Bend, OR, and grandchildren, Carter, Luke, Eli, Miranda, Colt and Delaney. His parents predeceased him. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 8, at 11:00 at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be Tuesday, October 9, at 10:00 at Veteran’s Cemetery. Donations, in memory of Terry H. Musgrave, may be made to HopeWest Hospice, 3090B North 12th Street, 81506 or First United Methodist Church, 522 White Avenue, 81501.
