Despite the obituary listing Dec. 31, 1916 as the wedding date. The following references indicate that Alfred and Winifred were married prior to that date: Routt County Sentinel, December 29, 1916, page 5: "Albert Hitchens went to Steamboat last Friday, being accompanied home by his wife, who is teaching the Fairplay school and who had been attending the county examination of teachers." Three Wire Winter Magazine, Issue #21, Winter 1986, pg. 10 : "Albert and Winnie were married December 3, 1916 at Pool Colorado."

WINIFRED HITCHENS DIED HERE TUESDAY, SERVICES SATURDAY
Mrs. Winifred HITCHENS, widely known resident of Routt county, died in Steamboat Tuesday, after being in ill health for a year. She had been active until the last six weeks when her condition rapidly became worse.
Funeral services will be held at the Memorial Methodist church at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Winifred Imogene CALLAHAN was born at Woodward, Iowa, June 27, 1896, and was 53 years, 10 months and 5 days old at the time of her death.
In early childhood she moved with her parents to the vicinity of Bismark, North Dakota, and from there to Wardner, Idaho. in these places she received her elementary education but when she was ready for high school returned to Woodward, Iowa, where she was graduated from high school. Soon after the death of her father in her senior year she moved with her mother to Denver, where she started preparation for teaching. In the fall of 1916 she came to Routt county and taught at Fairplay school. She was married to Albert HITCHENS of Milner on December 31, 1916. The young couple took up ranching and have remained in the county since that time.
Mrs. HITCHENS was active for many years in Rebekah Lodge No. 93 of Steamboat and also was a member of the Grange and the Elk Mountain Home Demonstration club. She was a member of Memorial Methodist church in Steamboat.
She is survived by her husband Albert HITCHENS of Milner; two sons, Melvin of Milner and Errold now in the U. S. Air Force, and two daughters, Mrs. Clifford MORE and Mrs. Thomas WATKINS of Steamboat Springs.
