Darrell Lynn Haugh, 63 of Steamboat Springs, passed away on February 7th, 2019 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born April 6th, 1955 in rural Bascom, OH to Robert Lewis Haugh and Donna Haugh. His birth was sudden causing him to be born on Lewis’ USMC field jacket in a field on the family farm.
On May 15, 1976, he wedded Julia Anderson of Tiffin, OH. The newlyweds made their home in Northern Minnesota where they built an unimproved log cabin and lived a subsistence lifestyle.
Eventually the couple and their young son Mackenzie would move west, living in many locations in Colorado and California where Darrell became a highly skilled construction manager. They returned to Northern Minnesota, in the Littlefork area, where Darrell started his own carpentry business.
In 1996, the family moved to Steamboat Springs where Darrell joined the newly established TCD as a site superintendent constructing commercial buildings. In 2002, he joined Oceaneering and for the next 12 years, he and Julie worked in Colorado, Cuba, Guam, Micronesia and Japan to name a few. Darrell eventually retired from the construction business to devote more time to his personal interests and in 2014 was a full-time Snowboard Instructor at Steamboat where he particularly enjoyed instructing children.
Darrell had many interests such as hiking, rock hounding, snowboarding, and carving to name a few, but nothing put a smile on his face more than the water. Rivers, Lakes, Oceans, whatever. He was most at home with a paddle, an oar, or a tiller in his hands on a Canoe, a SUP, a drift boat, a raft, or a 14-40 foot sail boat. Darrell even belonged to the Bihun Tasi Canoe Club in Guam where they raced 6-man outrigger canoes placing 2nd in the 4-mile event of the 2011 Micronesian Cup. Darrell also had a passion while under the water, doing numerous dives and recovering many WWII relics.
During his illness, Darrell was able to complete a long-time dream of his and finish the novel RATSCAB which was a fictionalized story regarding a small town labor dispute. He also completed Marianas, an historical fiction novel centered around centuries of history regarding the peoples of Polynesia.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife Julie and beloved son Mackenzie, as well as his brothers Terrence (Linda) of Michigan and Brad of Paonia, and nieces Sara, Karen, and Rachel.
An open house will be held at the family home- 105 Highland Circle from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, February 15th. All friends are welcome. A Celebration of his life will be scheduled in May or June.
In lieu of flowers or donations, celebrants should use the money or time and enjoy the outdoors with your loved ones.
