Harold Joe Kendrick May 15, 1925 - December 1, 2018
Harold Joe Kendrick, 93, passed away at HopeWest Hospice December 1, 2018. He was born to Ernest Eli and Nellie Faye (Roberts) Kendrick in Oklahoma, the youngest of five children. In late 1930 the family moved to a farm in Cedaredge where Joe graduated high school. He followed his oldest brother into the Navy as an Aviation Ordnanceman 3c, serving in the Asiatic Pacific area. After his discharge, he graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago and practiced in Durango before moving to Grand Junction. In 1955 he married Ruth "Gerri" Howell and together they raised three children, Harold Joe, Jr. (Judy) of Grand Junction; David Thomas (deceased) (Rhonda), and Kimberly Ann Kendrick of New York City. He is also survived by grandaughters, Jennifer and Sara; grandson, Michael, and greatgrandchildren, Savannah and Eli of Rio Rancho, NM. His other love (after Gerri and children) was flying. He used his plane in his practice to fly to the Rangely and Nucla areas to see patients who found it hard to get to Grand Junction. He built one of his planes himself from a design by Burt Rutan (famous round the world pilot) and took friends and family on great sightseeing trips from the Artic Circle to sights all over the United States. He was able to travel overseas, and always his general focus was on the people, how they made their living, their thoughts on life, and their history. He was active in Masons, Kiwanis, President of the Colorado Optometric Association and served on the Coloroado Optometric Board of Examiners, Bank of Orchard Mesa/ CNB Bank and Hilltop boards. Even though he was committed to his busy practice and numerous organizations he always found time to lend a helping hand to friends and family. He constantly thought of new experiences and fun activities for the family. Togetherness was his number one priority. Joe lived a long and full life in the service of others, was loving and generous of spirit, and he will be greatly missed. A family inurnment service will take place in the spring at the Eckert, Colorado Cemetery. Contributions may be made to HopeWest Hospice, 3090B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
