BELLE STWART ONE OF THE REAL OLD-TIMERS OF EAGLE VALLEY DIED JAN. 17. 1947.

By Adrian Reynolds, jr.

I One of the few really pioneer woI men left in the county has passed away, \yith the death of Belle Stewart, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Lemon, on Jan. 17, 1947. Bqlle Martin was born in Bent county, Missouri, on April 2, 1859. In 1879 she was married to Jack Stewart, and they moved to Leadville. In 1882, they maved to Dotsero and took up a Homestead, the fanch which lies across the Colorado river from the railroad station. Here the young married couple lived until after his death some years ago, and raised their family. There were five children, Audra, Claude, Edna, Maude, and Carl, all of whom are Jiving and in Eagle county, except Maude, who has made her home , in California for a number of years. Belle Stewart was a fine woman. She was a particular friend of the writer, and we have visited and talked with her by the hour of her early days n Dotsero. She had a keen memory, and as Dotsero and that part of the county was pretty wild in those days, she had many a true story to tell us, that would not sound so good to somh still living. Our visits with her were a delight. She kept a clear mind and memory almost to the last. For 6or 7 years she had been bedfast, from a broken hip sustained in a fall. But even through this affliction she was always cheerful. The body was laid to rest in the ccrhetry at Gypsum Monday, funeral services being held from the Lutheran church, with Rev. Paul A, Shields officiating, and the Andre Funeral Home having charge of the burial services.
