Family hears late daughter’s heart beat
Vail, CO Colorado
October 3, 2010

BEAVER CREEK – Viewers across America likely had tears in their eyes as they watched a story on “The Today Show” about 13-year-old Taylor Storch, who lost her life in a skiing accident at Beaver Creek in March. “The Today Show” featured a story about Taylor’s parents’ decision to donate their daughter’s organs once they learned she was brain-dead on March 15.

The decision was easy, Todd and Tara Storch said, because their daughter was such a giving person. “She was such a giving, loving person, and so this is just really what she would have wanted,” Tara Storch told “The Today Show” anchor Meredith Vieira on Friday. “She was so giving.” Taylor’s kidneys, eyes, liver, pancreas and heart were all donated, but it’s the story about her heart and its recipient that truly touched the Storches.

They met Patricia Winters, who received Taylor’s heart, about six months after Taylor passed away. Tara Storch had waited six months to finally have some kind of connection with her daughter

Patricia’s husband, Joe Winters, wanted to know who the donor was, and figured it out when he read news reports about Taylor’s death that said her heart would be donated to a 39-year-old Arizona woman.

Back in Texas, the Storches were also trying to figure out where their daughter’s heart had ended up.

When the families finally connected, Tara Storch got the connection she had been yearning for – she got to hear Taylor’s heart beat again. She listened to Winters’ chest with a stethoscope and was overcome with emotion. “She and I were extremely close,” Tara Storch told Vieira.
