LONGEST CONTINUOUS RESIDENT - Art Stremme, 97, services today

Graveside services for Art Stremme of Gypsum, Eagle County's longest continuous resident, will be held at 2pm today, March 12, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum.

Mr. Stremme, who would have celebrated his 98th birthday next month, did Sunday at Valley View Hospital. Although he had been in failing health in recent years, he was ill for only a short time preceding his death. Mr. Stremme was recognized in 1984 as one of Eagle County's most outstanding citizens and active seniors.

He was born April 19, 1889, on a homestead near Gypsum. When he was 3 the family moved to Brush Creek where his father worked on the Hume White Ranch.

Later the family moved to Fullford, owning a store and manning the post office. Mr. Stremme's father worked at the Polar Star Mine at Fullford, and was killed while thawing powder at the mine when Mr. Stremme was 5 years old.
His mother later marrried his uncle, Theodore Stremme, and moved back to Gypsum in 1905. He was then 16 years old.

His stepfather and O.W. Daggett purchased a general merchandise store at the corner of Railroad Avenue and First Street. Daggett later sold to the senior Stremme and the store was know for many years as Stremme's General Merchandise Store. Gypsum's post office was in the store, and Mr. Stremme's sister, Mayme, was the postmaster.

Mr. Stremme graduated from Eagle County High School's first graduating class in 1910. On July 15, 1978, ECHS held its first class reunion for graduates from 1910 to 1978. Mr. Stremme and his son John, were honored as the only father and son pair in attendance.

Mr. Stremme ranched for several years in the Gypsum Creek Valley above Gypsum, and worked in the family store with his father and sister. In 1946 Mr. Stremme and his sister retired and sold their merchandise to Marion and Gussie Baker. The store then became known as Baker's Market.

Surviving are his wife, Marie of Gypsum; two sons, John of Wheatride ad Lynn Ronald of Berhoud; a daughter Jean Mulnix of Juneau, Alaska. Another daughter, Irene Shoemaker, preceded him in death.

Bob Weeden will officiate at the graveside services. Farnum Richardson Mortuary of Glenwood in charge of arrangements.
