Jose S. Velasquez died Friday, June 7, at Denver Health Medical Center following an accident on June 6. He was 77.
Velasquez was born in El Valle, N.M., on May 27, 1925. His parents were the late Manuel and Casilda (Tafoya) Velasquez.
After serving in the Army and receiving an honorable discharge, Velasquez returned to New Mexico, where on Dec. 1, 1948, he married the former Androlica Montoya. Together they had six children. They moved to Colorado, where Jose worked as a miner for many years and was employed at the Cascade Hotel in Vail, where he worked for 18 years. Colleagues said he had a very strong work ethic, and that he loved to work and worked hard.
His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.
Velasquez is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Diana Velasquez, brother Juan Velasquez and sister Fadiciano Velasquez.
He is survived by his wife "Andy" in Leadville; his children Roger Velasquez in Denver, Gilbert (Joann) Velasquez in Leadville, Charlie (Becky) Longmont and Cathy (Scott) Griego in Leadville; brothers Procopio (Elaudia) Velasquez in Ojo Sarco, N.M and Pricilla (Orlando) Montoya El Valle, N.M.; 11 grandchildren, Lisa, Carlos, Valeria, Manuel, Jeniffer, David, Joseph, Chantelle, Diane, Audrye and Fabian; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew, Issacc, Loranzo, Cruzito, Daviana, Angel, Masio, and Madelynn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rosary was recited on Sunday, June 9, and Mass and Christian Burial was Monday, June 10 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville.
Father Tom Killeen officiated and Joan Dawson sang, accompanied by Jean Elliott. Pallbearers were Carlos and Manual Velasquez, David and Joseph Griego, Joe Flores and Fabian Lovato. Honorary Pallbearer was Russell Trujillo.
Internment was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Leadville with military honors at VFW Post No. 859. The family received friends at a reception at the Leadville Elk's Lodge.
